Across the world people are now facing a new threat to their health and well being.
The very best of things that happened in the world of medicine in the 20th century was the discovery of antibiotics, the life saving wonder drug, without which many of us would not have been here to enjoy the world.
But the abuse any good thing is sooner or later associated with dangerous consequences. Antibiotics are no exception.
Our physicians and medical practitioners over looked the danger and started indiscriminate, improper and unwanted prescribing of antibiotics. Our kids started to get it even for common cold. In viral infections it was prescribed as if to protect from secondary infection. In cases were simple care would have sufficed, antibiotics were used. Over the counter abuse by patients, too long or too short intake of medicines etc was rampant.
All these unfailingly contributed to the dangerous phenomenon called Antibiotic resistant bacteria. MRSA (http://www.medicinenet.com/mrsa_infection/article.htm) is reportedly sweeping across developed nations.Thousands are succumbing to it.
Now with less stringent control over it's use and abuse India is fast becoming another focal point of super bugs and Resistant organisms.
It is high time that we realize the need for preserving these life savers for an emergency. The abuse of antibiotics must come to an end forth with. Further the use must be guided by conscientious medical practitioners. Over the counter availability of antibiotics must stop.
If we do not act now Antibiotics will not act for us when they are most needed.
